Beneath Pleidus' Sky- Prologue
Mithra covered his wounded hand. Blood trickled lazily from the cut where one of the Resistant’s members had slashed him on his right hand using a poisonous weapon. He could feel the poison seeping through his veins, contaminating his blood. The only hindrance for the poison to spread too quickly was the piece of cloth tied tightly on his upper arm.
He looked up at the sky. The cloud looked ominously grey above. Flashes of lightning were forming in the cloud, thunders growling like a hungry monster. The soil will be tainted again with acid rain and he must get to the shelter quick or the poison will worsen, triggered by the acid rain.
He looked around. The trees and grass had somehow developed immunity against the acidic rain which had plagued Pleidus for more than two decades. The leaves became thick, the wood resilient to any physical assault. Even axes could not be used to cut the trees anymore. The roots buried deep in the earth, possibly used to look for less contaminated source of water and minerals hundreds of feet under the dirt.
Mithra seek shelter under one of the trees. He knew he could not completely run from the rainstorm but at least he could minimise the effect. The lightning would not reach out of the clouds above. The destabilisation of the earth caused the electrical charges to become haywired. Lightning did not reach out below, instead, it became like fireworks, crackling up above the clouds, heating up the atmosphere.
Just as he sat down on the grass, a few drops of rain fell onto his face, brought by the strong wind. He was determined to survive this ordeal, to deliver the urgent message to the Council. He would not give in to the poison which was racing to attack his body. His lower arm was turning purple, an effect from the toxin which had apparently multiply itself. He closed his eyes tightly, resisting the excruciating pain from the injury.
“Mithra!” he heard a voice calling him against the sound of the thunder and fierce whistling wind. “Mithra, answer me!”
Mithra’s eyes snapped opened. He scanned the surrounding. Alexis was walking around the area, shouting his name. The acid rain did not deter him to be in the open. He probably had taken the immunization from the acid rain beforehand.
“Alexis!” yelled Mithra towards Alexis. Alexis turned around and upon spotting Mithra, he ran towards him.
Alexis eyes widened when he saw Mithra’s injured arm. He kneeled beside Mithra and touched the arm. Mithra screamed out of pain. The touch seemed like knife stabbed into his injured arm.
“We need to get you back to the Headquarters. This is definitely bad. I had alerted the others. They’ll be here in a few minutes,” said Alexis with a sense of urgency. He tore the cloth from his sleeve and tied it around Mithra’s upper arm just above the cloth Mithra had tied before untying the old cloth which was already dirty. Alexis brought out a white pouch from the pocket of his long jacket and took out a syringe filled with clear liquid.
“This will only delay the effect of the poison for the time being,” explained Alexis shortly as he injected the clear liquid into Mithra’s vein.
A few seconds later, the purple colour and the pain gradually subsided, leaving a mild thumping feeling in his left arm. Mithra leant against the tree as the rain fell harder to the grown.
“What happened? We were worried sick,” Alexis was half-shouting, trying to make himself heard over the noise of the rainstorm.
Mithra cleared his throat. “Rhea. They managed to locate Rhea and are planning to send out a team to hunt her down,”
